#TBT Today we’re taking a trip back to the mid-1990s and our work in Lindora.Lindora is a government-funded housing development where future homeowners contributed one day of labor each week as part of the program. CRHF volunteers were proud to work alongside the community, offering support to families who needed an extra helping hand and helping move the project forward.Even before the neighborhood was completed, we recognized the importance of investing in the next generation. Together, we built a classroom and supported the local education system, ensuring that children had a place to learn while their community was taking shape. For nearly three decades, the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation has believed that strong communities are built not only with homes, but with education, compassion, and people working together. We’re grateful to everyone who has shared this journey with us over the years.#ThrowbackThursday #CommunityDevelopment #Education #Housing ... What an incredible day in La Carpio! We had the joy of walking through the streets with more than 200 children, accompanied by a vibrant folklore dance group, a lively marching band, colorful clowns, and one very tall friend who brought smiles everywhere we went. Along the way, I saw so many familiar faces and even had the chance to catch up with the Boyz on the Corner. Our message was simple yet powerful: La Carpio is part of the world.Together, we created a giant globe surrounded by sunflowers and white roses as a symbol of hope, unity, and peace. Each student proudly carried the flag of a different country, shared its name, and offered a heartfelt wish for peace for that nation. It was a beautiful reminder that, no matter where we come from, we are all connected and every child has a voice in building a more peaceful world.A wonderful day filled with community, joy, and hope. 🌍🌻🤍 ... By working side by side with our teachers and children, they helped create engaging learning materials and shared fresh ideas that will continue to benefit our program long after their departure. They also facilitated inspiring workshops for our teaching team, gently encouraging us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace new approaches as we continue building the future of education together.Thank you, Mere and Kate, for sharing your knowledge, your compassion, and your hearts with our community. 🎉 Progress Update Video at Centro Modelo! 🎉The first floor of Centro Modelo is now complete and ready to welcome students any day! This exciting milestone includes the construction of new columns and beams to strengthen the building, as well as the creation of the first computer lab in La Carpio, opening new opportunities for learning, technology, and youth development. With this achievement, we are now 90% complete with our Swiss-funded project. Over the past months, this project has transformed both Centro Modelo, Montessori and La Libertad through major structural improvements, including reinforcing and rebuilding key sections of the facilities to provide safer and more functional spaces for the community. The final steps include replacing a few corrugated roofing sheets and painting the roofs at both Centro Modelo and La Libertad. Once these improvements are completed, we will install the computer lab equipment and prepare for the official inauguration of these renovated learning spaces.A huge thank you to our Swiss partners, volunteers, workers, and community members who have helped make this vision a reality. Together, we are creating stronger, safer, and more inspiring spaces for children, youth, and families in La Carpio. We look forward to celebrating the completion of this project with all of you very soon! 🇨🇷🇨🇭Embajada de Suiza en San José#LaCarpio #centromodelo #EducationForAll #CommunityDevelopment #costarica ... #TBT Throwback Thursday to when we began building the Centro Modelo in La Carpio at the end of the 90’s, and into 2000. A lot has changed since then. If you’ve visited recently, you might recognize this building. The background has changed significantly as the community has grown and improved. Back then we worked with Dartmouth College and other schools along with our street kids program to construct this Family Wellbeing Center. Serving multiple purposes, from a clinic and prekindergarten, to a training center for sports, wood workshop, clothing sales and most recently computer lab. 📖 💻 🏥 This is the building we are now remodeling with the funding from the Swiss embassy. It’s that time of year again in beautiful Costa Rica 🌿🌸The mountains and roads light up as the trees burst into color — yellow, orange, red, pink, white, and so much more. 🌈 There is such incredible beauty in the diversity this country has to offer.Pictured here is the stunning Tabebuia ochracea (Corteza Amarilla). When its bright yellow flowers fall, they create a golden carpet along the roadsides for a few magical days — a gift for anyone passing by. A simple but powerful reminder of how nature provides beauty, renewal, and joy in every season. 💛✨Eco-Camp has been one of our foundational programs, focusing on connecting youth from different backgrounds with nature. Through hikes, environmental education, team-building activities, and shared experiences outdoors, students learn not only about conservation — but about themselves and one another. In a country so rich in biodiversity, these moments matter. When people stand beneath trees like the Corteza Amarilla, feel the mountain air, and witness the changing seasons, they begin to understand their role as stewards of this land.Nature becomes the classroom. Diversity becomes the lesson. And respect for one another — and for creation — becomes the takeaway. 🌿#nature #nonprofit #environment #costarica #volunteer ... Ver másVer menos

📚✏️ Back to School Support in La Carpio ✏️📚With the school year just around the corner, many parents are preparing to buy the supplies required by the Ministry of Education. Throwback Thursday 💚💻The iconic green bubble Mac!We still remember buying this computer brand new in Costa Rica. Around this time, LAN entered the scene and we started using Excel sheets, digitizing our data, year-end reports, and more.It was also right when volunteers built our first website—and suddenly, between word of mouth and the internet, we began welcoming thousands of volunteers each year. From humble beginnings to big impact… we were on a roll 🚀#ThrowbackThursday #tbt #crhfhistory #FromThenToNow #DigitalBeginnings ... #TBT Throwback Thursday 💾✨Let’s rewind to the early 90’s—when dial-up ruled, that iconic internet sound filled the room, and here in Costa Rica we officially started communicating with our supporters up north via email 📧Who remembers the Macintosh Plus? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️This beauty is the very computer we used when the foundation was officially founded in 1997. Talk about humble (and bulky!) beginnings 😄If you come visit us in Casa Quetzal, you’ll get to see this classic—and a few other relics—from the many years we’ve been serving the Costa Rican community. One thing that hasn’t changed? 💚Our belief in responsible, thoughtful, and compassionate use of technology. Now more than ever, how we use tech really matters. And just wait… next up we’ll be pulling out the original iMac we used after this one 👀You know the one—the clear green plastic shell 😍Stay tuned!#technology #nonprofit #costarica #ngo ... 📚✨ They Wrote Their First Book in English! ✨📚Our grand language experiment was a beautiful success. The kids in La Carpio chose a book written in English, and our volunteers read it to them entirely in English. Then came the challenge: the children retold the story in Spanish, using what they understood, remembered, and imagined. Each child created their own little book, sharing the story in their own words and drawings. Through this activity, they experienced what it feels like to step into a new language—listening closely, interpreting meaning, and building confidence along the way.A powerful reminder that language learning is about curiosity, courage, and creativity 💛Thanks to @uconn students for their support!#education #literature #nonprofit #NGO #costarica ... 📚 My Book Is My Friend – Literature and Arts ProgramThis week, our My Book Is My Friend Literature Program reached a remote Indigenous community in the Upper Chirripó Cabécar region. We are continuing to strengthen our teaching around the importance of writing and reading comprehension, helping children build skills that support learning and self-expression.A heartfelt thank you to Teacher Betty, who jumped right in to coach the children in their theater group. The students proudly presented “The Boy in the Rainforest,” a beautiful story that highlights the richness of nature and the joy of gratitude. As happens everywhere, proud parents captured the moment on their phones, recording their children’s performance with big smiles and even bigger hearts. Moments like these remind us why access to education and creative expression matters so much. 🌿📖#art #education #nonprofit #costarica #ngo ... Ver másVer menos

🍽️ La Libertad Hot Lunch Program 💛Every day, we provide hot, nutritious meals to youth in La Libertad, one of the most impoverished areas of La Carpio. For many of these children and teens, this meal is the most reliable source of nourishment they receive each day.Through our program, an average of 40 youth enjoy a variety of healthy, balanced, and fun meals that support their growth, learning, and well-being.This program is made possible through our Food Bank initiative, with the generous support of @automercadocostarica . We stopped by today to check on the renovation of the old priest’s home as we transform it into a community center and library. The materials have arrived, the space is cleared, and now we’re eagerly waiting for the work team to begin. This building has an incredible story—its solid cement walls were built by German priests who arrived here in the 1950s after WWII. The structure has held strong for decades, and the original wooden floors are beautiful pieces of history that we’re committed to rescuing and restoring.Excited to see this space come back to life for the community. ❤️📚🏡#indigenous #costarica #ngo #education #library #literature #culture #nonprofit ... 🎄✨ Centro Modelo Christmas Party ✨🎄Today we celebrated Christmas with our beautiful group of four-year-olds at Centro Modelo. It wasn’t a fancy party — but it was overflowing with love for these little ones. ❤️A huge thank-you to Gloria, who painted the room, coordinated the food and gifts, and even brought in the sweetest clown to entertain the children. 🎨🎁🤡I was honored to be the featured speaker and shared five simple tips for living a healthy life with the kids. We ended our time together holding hands and making a promise to protect and care for one another. 🤝💞“And then it hit me… we built this building more than 20 years ago, when the mothers of these children were the same age their little ones are today. 🥹 How many bright young lives have begun their educational journey with CRHF? 🇨🇷✨ Costa Rica Celebrates PeaceToday, Costa Rica honors one of its most defining and inspiring decisions—Día de la Abolición del Ejército, the day our military was officially abolished in 1948.Instead of investing in war, our nation chose to invest in education, health, and human dignity. That legacy lives on in classrooms, community centers, clinics, and programs that empower those most in need.At the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation, we carry that spirit forward every day—believing that peace is built through opportunity, compassion, and justice, not conflict.🕊️ Today, we celebrate a country that leads with humanity—and we recommit ourselves to helping families, children, and communities thrive.💜 From all of us at CRHF, thank you for supporting peace in action.#costarica #díadelaabolicióndelejército #noarmyday #CostaRicaSinEjército #paz #peace #HumanitarianWork #CRHF #costaricanhumanitarianfoundation #EducationForAll #PeaceInAction #ServeWithLove #ComunidadCR #somoscostarica #nonviolencemovement #HumanDignity #costaricapuravida ...
