โจ TBT to our work in Tortuguero. ๐ค๐ฟWillis Rankin was more than just a boatman. He was a community leader, a visionary, and an important part of so many CRHF journeys to Tortuguero. He helped coordinate countless trips and welcomed international visitors to this incredible part of Costa Rica.Back then, the journey itself was an adventureโtaking anywhere from 6 to 10 hours, depending on the weather and the conditions of the canals, ocean, and rivers. Traveling to Tortuguero often felt like stepping back in time. Remote, beautiful, unpredictable, and truly magical.Willis is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on through the impact he had on his community and on the many international visitors whose lives and perspectives were touched through these journeys.Today, we remember Willis and look back with gratitude on the adventures, friendships, and unforgettable experiences that connected us to the people and beauty of Tortuguero. ๐๐จ๐ท#tbt #tortuguero #costarica #nonprofit #adventure
โฐ 6:00 AM at CRHF in La Carpioโฆ and the work is already underway.365 days a year, our buses head out early each morning to pick up food generously donated by Auto Mercado supermarkets. ๐๐ฅฌ๐๐On average, we recover 500 kilos of food every single day that would otherwise go to waste.Instead, this food helps provide healthy and nutritious options to people in our community, including single mothers, persons with disabilities, seniors living on fixed incomes, and families and individuals simply going through a difficult time. โค๏ธBehind this program is an incredible team of collaborators who work hard every day. ๐โค๏ธ A home with books can help build a brighter future.Books are more than stories. They give children opportunities to explore, learn, imagine and dream.Research has found a strong connection between having books at home and educational attainmentโchildren growing up with books are more likely to complete more years of schooling. This is one reason the work of people like Dolly Parton, through her Imagination Library, has been so meaningful: putting books into childrenโs hands and into their homes. At the CRHF, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading.Gracias por compartir nuestro sueรฑo. โค๏ธ#CRHF #CostaRicanHumanitarianFoundation #BooksMatter #ChildrensLiteracy #Education Reading DollyParton ImaginationLibrary GraciasPorCompartirNuestroSueรฑo
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, an extraordinary American icon whose legacy extends far beyond music.Dolly was a passionate advocate for children, education, and literacy. Through her Imagination Library, launched in 1995, she helped put hundreds of millions of books into the hands of children around the world, inspiring a love of reading from an early age. She also supported scholarships and educational opportunities for young people through the Dollywood Foundation. She used her remarkable platform and influence to make education and opportunity more accessible to children and families.A true American leader, pioneer, and humanitarian whose impact will continue for generations.Rest in Peace, Dolly. ๐โค๏ธ

This weekend, we also had the opportunity to take part in the screening of Phoenix, a rock opera short film directed by longtime friend and supporter of the CRHF, Bruce Callow. The film portrays the life of a soldier and explores the lasting effects that war can have on those who experience it.Following the screening, Gail joined a panel discussion, sharing her experiences working with veterans and with the children of refugees from war-torn countries such as El Salvador and Nicaragua during the 1980s and 1990s.We were especially proud to bring along a group of young people from our Rescate Sports League. Many are children of people who lived through those difficult periods of conflict and displacement. Today, they have the opportunity to grow up in Costa Ricaโa country without a militaryโand build a very different future for themselves and their families.Thank you to Bruce for the invitation and for creating a film that opens the door to important conversations about war, its human impact, and the hope for a more peaceful future. #film #costarica #community #youth #nonprofitorganization

#TBT Today weโre taking a trip back to the mid-1990s and our work in Lindora.Lindora is a government-funded housing development where future homeowners contributed one day of labor each week as part of the program. CRHF volunteers were proud to work alongside the community, offering support to families who needed an extra helping hand and helping move the project forward.Even before the neighborhood was completed, we recognized the importance of investing in the next generation. Together, we built a classroom and supported the local education system, ensuring that children had a place to learn while their community was taking shape. For nearly three decades, the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation has believed that strong communities are built not only with homes, but with education, compassion, and people working together.Weโre grateful to everyone who has shared this journey with us over the years.#ThrowbackThursday #CommunityDevelopment #Education #Housing
What an incredible day in La Carpio! We had the joy of walking through the streets with more than 200 children, accompanied by a vibrant folklore dance group, a lively marching band, colorful clowns, and one very tall friend who brought smiles everywhere we went. Along the way, I saw so many familiar faces and even had the chance to catch up with the Boyz on the Corner. Our message was simple yet powerful: La Carpio is part of the world.Together, we created a giant globe surrounded by sunflowers and white roses as a symbol of hope, unity, and peace. Each student proudly carried the flag of a different country, shared its name, and offered a heartfelt wish for peace for that nation. It was a beautiful reminder that, no matter where we come from, we are all connected and every child has a voice in building a more peaceful world.A wonderful day filled with community, joy, and hope. ๐๐ป๐ค

โWhen I was in school, we always had to write an essay on how I spent my summer vacaciones.โLook at how creatively our teacher Angela motivated our students to do something different โจThey painted camerasโand the roll of film coming outโbecame each childโs own images of summer. A hands-on, imaginative way to tell their stories without writing a single paragraph.Learning like this builds confidence, creativity, and a real love for self-expressionโexactly what every child deserves.#CreativeLearning #EducationMatters #nonprofit #costarica
#TBT Throwback Thursday to when we began building the Centro Modelo in La Carpio at the end of the 90โs, and into 2000. A lot has changed since then. If youโve visited recently, you might recognize this building. The background has changed significantly as the community has grown and improved. Back then we worked with Dartmouth College and other schools along with our street kids program to construct this Family Wellbeing Center. Serving multiple purposes, from a clinic and prekindergarten, to a training center for sports, wood workshop, clothing sales and most recently computer lab. ๐ ๐ป ๐ฅ This is the building we are now remodeling with the funding from the Swiss embassy. The workers are cooking with gas! More on that soonโฆ. ๐จ๐ญ#CostaRica #switzerland #nonprofit #construction @dartmouthcollege
These are Carlaโs children. Three months ago, they returned to Nicaragua to care for their sick grandmother. But Carla quickly realized how difficult it was to provide for her children thereโlimited work opportunities, rising costs, and challenging living conditions made it nearly impossible. Thanks to your support, we were able to help bring them back to La Carpio. Here, theyโll have access to nutritious meals, education, and a safe place to grow and thrive. Most importantly, theyโll be surrounded by a community that cares.Weโre ready to welcome Carla and her children backโwith open arms and full hearts.#CostaRica #LaCarpio #CommunitySupport #Nonprofit #Education

All the cheerful children learning, laughing and breathing the fresh Escazu mountainsโ air.Weโll be doing a series highlighting and explaining our work in the 90โs based on our pinned, trending, recently uploaded 3 minute long clip โWhat were you like in the 90โsโ.#costarica #escazรบ #nonprofitorganization #ngo @peacecorpscostarica

Two meaningful days with students from Mississippi State University. ๐บ๐ธ๐ค๐จ๐ทThey visited to learn about the Costa Rican health system while helping provide general health checks for youth in our programs. The good news: most of our youth are healthy and doing well. One challenge we did notice, however, was vision and eye health.Perfect timingโnext week our friends from @amigoseyecare will be visiting and can provide follow-up exams, glasses, and additional care for those who need it.Partnerships like these help us continue supporting vulnerable communities across Costa Rica. Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible. ๐#costarica #CommunityHealth #nonprofit #GlobalHealth #LaCarpio @msstate

Throwback Thursday #tbt to when we had the only clinic in La Carpio. Before any public health services were available for the population of la Carpio, we provided basically free healthcare to a variety of beneficiaries. For 10 years , from 2000-2010 in our Centro Modelo Building first floor. 30 appointments average a dayx250 days a year x 10 years = at least 75,000 healthier persons during its operations. #nonprofit #costarica #health #healthcare

Itโs that time of year again in beautiful Costa Rica ๐ฟ๐ธThe mountains and roads light up as the trees burst into color โ yellow, orange, red, pink, white, and so much more. ๐ There is such incredible beauty in the diversity this country has to offer.Pictured here is the stunning Tabebuia ochracea (Corteza Amarilla). When its bright yellow flowers fall, they create a golden carpet along the roadsides for a few magical days โ a gift for anyone passing by. A simple but powerful reminder of how nature provides beauty, renewal, and joy in every season. ๐โจEco-Camp has been one of our foundational programs, focusing on connecting youth from different backgrounds with nature. Through hikes, environmental education, team-building activities, and shared experiences outdoors, students learn not only about conservation โ but about themselves and one another. In a country so rich in biodiversity, these moments matter. When people stand beneath trees like the Corteza Amarilla, feel the mountain air, and witness the changing seasons, they begin to understand their role as stewards of this land.Nature becomes the classroom. Diversity becomes the lesson. And respect for one another โ and for creation โ becomes the takeaway. ๐ฟ#nature #nonprofit #environment #costarica #volunteer
โจ Throwback Thursday โจToday weโre reflecting on our work in the Bajo Los Anonos neighborhood in the early 2000s.Together with the local school, we supported a variety of community development activities focused on education and opportunity. Through our international and local partnerships, we helped provide vital healthcare services to families who otherwise had limited access. We also worked alongside the community to build and renovate homes for some of the most vulnerable families in the area โ creating safer, more dignified living conditions. While challenges still exist, Bajo Los Anonos has come a long way since those days, with improved infrastructure and expanded services that continue to strengthen the community.Weโre grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey. ๐#ThrowbackThursday #CommunityDevelopment #nonprofit #costarica #health
